10 Basic tips for Bewildered Internet Marketing Newbies

My Mentor and many of the books I’ve read told me that I if I can share what I learn it will help with my business growth so, for once, I am doing exactly what was suggested.  And you know what?  It feels good already because I really enjoy helping others whenever I can!  I believe that’s one of the main purposes of my life here on earth!

I guess that’s the first tip – Listen to your mentor or sponsor and do what is suggested.

This article is just a list of things I have learned which have worked for me over the first 3 weeks or so of my new business creation.  A good word “creation”; looking at my business as something I am creating has put a very positive energy into it for me.  There’s no techie stuff here and these ideas may not work for you; most of them are so very simple that I missed them to start with.

I think I’ll do it as a list, which will make it much simpler and save words.  Here we go then:

1. Do exactly what the people in the know tell you to do, not what you think they told you to do. You’re on a steep learning curve at the moment and can discard things later  as you learn more
2. Treat the job of building your business as a creation, a work of art rather than a seemingly mammoth task.
3. I found I feel better about myself if I dress decently for working (creating!).  I know it’s my conditioning but I feel uncomfortable if I dress too “comfortably”.  I don’t mean a collar and tie, I live in Spain and, at the moment work in shorts and Tee shirt but I make sure they are decent and clean.  I shave most days and generally look after myself.  Feeling good about yourself is so important.
4. Read as much as you sensibly can and don’t read selectively; that is, don’t skip bits.  I found I was often missing the most important thing I was meant to learn that day.  I had bought a Sony ebook reader a couple of weeks before I started and have found it invaluable.  It is very easy to upload pdf format ebooks onto it so I can read away from my PC, anywhere I want.
5. Still on reading.  I find that if there’s one word or phrase I haven’t understood in a chapter then I probably miss the complete message so I try to look up any words or techie jargon I don’t understand immediately.
6. Don’t allow time to become your enemy, make it your friend.  A lot of people are able to work for 8,10,12 hours straight through without  a break  I can’t do that; I quickly become dull and lethargic, losing interest and enthusiasm.  Get up from your chair and take a 5 minute break every hour or so, get some fresh air, take some deep breathes and do a few stretches.  Try to clear your mind for just a minute or two.  You’ll find you feel very refreshed and will have more energy and creative insights when you sit down again.  I’m looking for a desktop clock that will chime every hour to help me do this. Take a proper meal break, not just a sandwich at your desk; you need the energy.
7. My sponsor suggested that I always have a notebook handy to jot down ideas as they come up.  I ignored this, of course, but having completely lost what I thought were wonderful ideas at the time I now do exactly as was suggested.
8. For the first couple of weeks I was so overwhelmed by what seemed like mountains of stuff I had to learn and I became bewildered, frustrated and then angry.  I can’t do anything useful when these emotions are bubbling away inside me.  Last week I made myself a weekly plan of what I intended to do.  I put on it what I thought I could achieve this week, including things I had no idea how to do.  I also put on, belatedly mind you, things like walking the dog, cleaning the car and talking to my wife.  Remember your real life!
9. From my weekly list I make a daily task plan.  Just on a bit of paper blue-tacked to the wall.  This has been by far the best thing I’ve done.  It gives me clear goals and therefore direction.  I can change the plan anytime I wish and, most importantly, I don’t beat myself up if I don’t do it all.  I just put it on the next day’s plan, or not, as the case may be.  Cross off jobs as you complete them; then you know that you are moving forward and being both creative and productive.  You’ll feel good about yourself and your business.
10. Ask yourself regularly, whenever you think of it, “Am I being productive at the moment?” Answer this honestly and sensibly; you may be lying on a beach soaking up the rays and may well decide that it’s the most productive thing you could be doing right now.  Confused?  Just think about it a while.
